collaborative research is key to my feminist praxis

community networks

My research into the queer/feminist punk scene is rooted in my position as part of this community. In 2011 my first punk band, Not Right, formed. We played gigs around the country for 4 years and along the way met many wonderful people. In 2012, with a group of likeminded feminists, we started Revolt, a series of feminist punk nights that ran in Coventry until 2017. This gave us the opportunity to put on some of the many other amazing acts emerging around the country. I was involved with running Femmington Spa Queer Fest, a queer punk weekender in 2015. I have also played with Die Wrecked and Fear and Slothing.

academic networks

I recently became a member of the Community Development Journal, the leading journal for academics and practitioners of Community Development worldwide. Check out our website, full of resources, here.

I am part of a collective of archivists, academics, heritage and community experts interested in practices of DIY record keeping. We ran the FREE event Recording It Ourselves, a Day Event about DIY Cultures, Information, Archives and Heritage in March 2021.

FUTURESEX, led by Dr David Andrew Griffiths along with a group of early career academics based at the University of Surrey, is funded by Wellcome Trust. We run interdisciplinary events that bring together academics, activists and artists to consider the futures and the histories of sex and sexuality. In February-March 2021 we ran the ‘witness’ series.

Together with Dr Helen Kingstone I run the Surrey History Cluster, a group of academics, researchers and doctoral students who use historical methods in their interdisciplinary research. We have members from across all faculties of the University of Surrey.

I am a founding member of the Sex, Gender and Sexuality research group at the University of Surrey. We are an inter- and cross- disciplinary group of researchers working on related topics. Check out our website for updates of our research projects, events and outputs.

I am on the steering committee of the Punk Scholars Network. We bring together anyone with an interest in rigorous research on any aspects of punk. We are keen to develop and support postgraduate and early career opportunities in this area. Predominantly based in the UK, we have affiliate groups around the globe.

The Interdisciplinary Network for the Study of Subcultures, Popular Music and Social Change aims to bring together recent studies, insights and methodological approaches in this rich, interdisciplinary field. We have received funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
